All classes and workshops are available on a first-come/first-serve basis.

To register, send an email to conference@generictheater.org.
Include the following information: your name, email address, a contact number and the name of the classes you wish to attend.

Confirmed registrants will be e-mailed a conference packet. You do not need to register to attend a panel discussion.

Cost:

  • Classes, Workshops, Discussion Panels and Community Open Auditions are free and open to the public.
  • The Burlesque Showcase and The Festival of Shorts are seated ticketed events, with a recommended donation of $10 and $5, respectively.

Method Acting
Instructor:  Sylvia Hutson
When: Monday 7/19, 7pm
Explore the technique and philosophy of Method acting, employed by many actors in developing their characters.  Maximum: 20.

Stage Management
Instructor:  Vincent DeSanto
When: Tues 7/20, 7pm
Learn the fundamentals of stage management and the tools, knowledge and qualities needed by a stage manager to successfully put on a production.
Maximum: 20.

The Production Process
Instructor:  Donna Dickerson
When: Wed 7/21, 7pm
Explore an approach to producing that results in a polished show and raving fans from everyone who's involved, backstage, onstage, and especially, the audience. Get tips and tools you can use to create a drama-free backstage, killer marketing and multiple streams of income that work with any show. Maximum: 20.

How to Perform a Cold Reading
Instructor:  Pinkie Spencer-Chappell
When: Thurs 7/22, 7pm
Learn how to deliver a solid cold reading through examples, tips and exercises. Recommended for actors at every career level. Maximum: 20.

Emerging Technologies in Theater
Instructor:  Jonathan Bremner
When: Mon 7/26, 7pm
Discuss and explore emerging production trends in technical theater, including lighting and sound design.  Gain knowledge to help you advance your career in technical theater. Maximum: 20.

Auditioning for Musical Theater
Instructor:  Jeffrey Corriveau 
When: Tues 7/27, 7pm
Perform exercises and receive solid feedback in this class to help you deliver a strong and commanding audition for musical theater. Gain advice on improving your technique and professionalism to successfully land roles. Maximum: 20.

Box Office Procedures
Instructor: Stephen Heninger

Explore the trends and techniques in how theaters monitor, track and report finances and discuss methods to improve productivity at the box office.

Burlesque
Instructors: Aimee Koller, Kelsea White, Gabby Nelson
When: Monday 7/19 - Fri 7/23, 7pm
Learn the history and styles of burlesque and perform routines that will culminate in a fantastic burlesque showcase. This workshop is for women 18+ only and participants must be available to perform in the Burlesque Showcase on 7/24. Students will be asked to provide own wardrobe, props and makeup. Maximum: 15.

CORE Theater Ensemble
Instructors: Emel Ertugal, Edwin Castillo
When: Monday 7/19 - Tues 7/20, 7pm
Explore the methods, techniques, philosophy and multi-disciplinary approach employed by CORE Theater Ensemble, including introductory lessons in Suzuki and Viewpoints training. Maximum: 20.

Scene Study
Instructor: Jeanne Elizabeth Pivirotto 
When: Monday 7/19 - Thurs 7/29, 7pm
Explore how a scene comes together in this hands-on intensive class. Perform excerpts from plays and receive feedback on improving your performance. Students in this class will perform pieces for the Festival of Shorts on 7/31. Maximum: 20.

Choreography Workshop: 'Hot Honey Rag'
Instructor: Dana Marguilies
When: Tues 7/27 - Thurs 7/29, 7pm
Learn original choreography to the showstopper dance number “Hot Honey Rag” from the musical “Chicago”.  Designed for women of all ages.  Students must provide own dance heels and costume. Students will perform the choreography as the closing number of the Gala on 7/30. Maximum: 15.

Choreography Workshop: 'Seize the Day'
Instructor: Cleo Antolin
When: Mon 7/26 - Thurs 7/29, 7pm
Learn original choreography inspired by the song “Seize the Day” from the movie musical “Newsies”, designed for male and female intermediate-advanced dancers aged 11 through 20’s.  Students must provide own dance shoes and costume and will perform the dance as part of the Gala on 7/30. See Gala under “Events”. Maximum: 15.

PANEL DISCUSSIONS:

60-90 minute moderated discussions. All panels are free and open to the public to attend as audience members.

Theatre Education: Real World vs. Academia
Moderator: Jeffrey Corriveau
When: Sat 7/24, 11am
Hear panelists discuss the successes and flaws of theatre education. Are students being prepared realistically for the real world or are they being set up for failure? Panelists will include university professors, academic and students in this topical discussion.  Audience members can participate in a question-answer forum.

State of the Theater Industry
Moderator: Matthew Friedman
When: Sat 7/24, 1:30pm
Performing arts organizations and granting entities will become panelists in this dialogue about the overall health of the theater industry in Hampton Roads.  Examine how the recession has affected business decisions, audience development, fundraising and volunteerism.

Community Theater Roundtable
Moderator: Jeffrey Corriveau

Join members of the boards of local theater arts organizations as they discuss successes, failures, improvements and goals of each organization. This groundbreaking discussion aims to help theaters find ways to help each other and share resources in an economy when entertainment dollars are low.

EVENTS:

Virginia Stage Co. & Generic Theater present Community Open Auditions
Organized by Patrick Mullins and Philip Odango
When: Sun 7/25, 2:00-7:00pm
Generic Theater and Virginia Stage Co. partner to offer an organized community open audition for theater and musical theater, an opportunity for performers to be seen by directors from equity professional, independent and community theaters. Use this opportunity to showcase your abilities for consideration in upcoming stage productions.  Acting auditionees: prepare any monologue 5 minutes or less. Musical theater vocal and dance auditionees: prepare a Broadway style song or art song, 3 minutes or less, and provide a CD  or sheet music. An accompanist will be provided.  You may audition up to two (2) of the following:  Acting, Vocal or Dance.  Please plan to bring 10 copies of your acting resumes and headshots.

Burlesque Showcase
When: Sat 7/24, 8pm
A dazzling display of exotic dance and theatrical spectacle. Enjoy a burlesque extravaganza with feathers, fun and fantasy. Recommended for adults.
Ticketed event with a recommended donation of $10.

Generic 30th Anniversary Gala
When: Fri 7/30, 7pm
A celebration of thirty years of Generic Theater’s contributions to Norfolk’s performing arts culture in this black-tie event. The founders of Generic Theater are honored in an evening of live performances and commemoration of lifetime achievement. By invitation only. 

Festival of Shorts
When: Sat 7/31, 8pm
An evening of performances by the students in the Scene Study class.  Ticketed event with a recommended donation of $5.
