A deeply moving play inspired by the true events surrounding the controversial 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance—a play seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture, and by others as an act of traitorous libel. INDECENT charts the history of an incendiary drama and the path of the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it.

Flyin’ West
Written by Pearl Cleage

Weekends September 8 – October 1, 2023
Fridays & Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2:30pm
Directed by Terrance Afer-Anderson

Following the end of the Civil War, many former slaves, took advantage of The Homestead Act and went West to build new lives for themselves and their families. Many of these homesteaders were black women who overcame tremendous odds to work their own land and make a place for themselves in an often harsh and forbidding environment. Set in 1898, Pearl Cleage’s “FLYIN’ WEST” is the story of some of these African-American female pioneers who settled, together, in the all-black town of Nicodemus, Kansas; facing problems ranging from the inevitability of long, cold winters, to the possibility of domestic violence, to the continuing spectra of racial conflict. It is a call to all women to follow their dreams, create lives that are meaningful, and honestly tell their stories.

Set in a small, remote pub in rural Ireland, three local men gather one night to share their usual gossip, lies, and a pint or two. On this particular evening, their close-knit group is joined by a newcomer to the area. As the night becomes dark and stormy, their stories take the same path, following the rural Irish tradition of faeries and folklore. The tables are soon turned, however, when Valerie the newcomer, tells a tragic tale of her own.

Saying good-bye to the dearly departed has never been so funny. The show centers around a stern patriarch who has recently passed away before he’s had a chance to make amends with his very dysfunctional family. The play – while loaded with laughs – is timeless due to its themes of reconciliation, family, and paying tribute to the departed.
